What's in a Name?

'Fhithich' is the gaelic for raven, that rather majestic corvid now associated with hills and mountains. It appears in many place names: Creag an Fhithich on Ben Lawers and in a variant spelling as Creag nam Fitheach near Oban.

Overlooking Loch Dunvegan on Skye (NG2348) is a crag named as Biod na Fhithich which name translates as the 'Top of the Ravens':

In Kintail both Glen Shiel (NG9514) and Inverinate (NG9127) also have tops named Biod na Fhithich. Further west in Gleann Beag (NG8815) is Bad an Fhithich Mhòir.
